to be regarded as true No. 1 in Cricket?
Not talking about No.1 in Test cricket but No.1 in Cricket overall ,this is something which is only earned through the Performance and respect earned from other teams and Unbiased fans.
its Something which Can not be earned through Gaining points In rankings.
Will England will be able to do it?
They are often criticized for not performing in Subcontinent (which is true if we look into the results of last decade or so ).
They are Criticized for not Winning a World cup and being an Average side in ODIs.(the thrashing they received from Australia and India in last 3 or 4 years come to Mind)
So does England have the Ability to Change that and be regarded as true No.1 of Cricket in the decade which follows?

England is a team which can not perform well away from home, especially in the sub continent. But they still have the potential to be number 1.

Hmm, a very good question.
I cant see England being the top – No1 in ODIs or in T20s cos they just arent that good.
Tests however are a different story
I dont think we can get a “true” number one in the near future, a team who can simulataneously by number 1 in all formats. Although, Australia was number one in everything, so it is possible.
The three formats are really quite different to one another and in my opinion its best to keep them separate, because they are three totally different games which test different things and require slightly different skills. Eg in a test the captain has to do a lot more thinking, not so in T20. In T20 a batsman has the license to go out and just hit everything. Test cricket demands something totally different, and has to be said something much more challenging.
However to establish yourself at number 1, a team should win in differnt conditions home and away for that particular format. In test cricket, England are getting there and are probably closer to it that any other team at present. They have defeated Australia home and away, have defeated Sri Lanka at home and might do the same to India. The next test will lie with South Africa and how well they perform in the sub contient.
Quite honestly, i cant really see England reaching Number 1 in ODIs though. I would love to, but i cant see England getting to that level.
So i cant see England being a “true” number one but i think that insha’Allah they will become a test number 1
